Alone through the winter
A polar research station depends on fuel delivered once a season, generators running for months and a satellite link to the world, with a small crew through the polar night. A failure that would be minor elsewhere can end the season, and the polar regions have some of the strictest environmental rules on Earth.
Ce qui est mesuré
Power, fuel, weather and waste
Meters read generators, solar, wind and batteries, sensors read fuel tanks, lines and transfer points, a reference station measures weather and snow, and environmental points record wastewater and incinerator releases, so every system the station depends on is in one record.

Le nœud de base
Fuel, balanced and forecast
The node balances generators, renewables and batteries to cut fuel use, forecasts fuel to the next resupply, detects leaks from tank levels and alarms, and keeps all station systems on one record that a small winter crew can watch. Every value is signed at the node before it leaves.
Radio et liaisons
Two satellite paths
A large dish carries science data and station systems at high capacity. A low-power direct-to-device terminal keeps alarms flowing when the main link is down in a storm, so the home programme always knows the station’s state. When one path fails, the other carries the data.

Comment ça marche
From a falling tank to a saved winter
In midwinter a fuel tank level falls faster than generator use explains. The node flags a possible leak; the crew finds a weeping valve on a transfer line and isolates it. The spill is contained, recorded for the environmental report, and the fuel forecast still reaches the resupply.
De la commande à l’exploitation · Commande
Scope the station
The scope reads the station’s power plant, fuel farm, science loads, links and winter crew. Nexus Observatory Inc. returns the monitoring design, energy management, environmental records and a price per station and per year, planned around the resupply season. The scope is agreed before any site work begins.

Survey in the summer season
Crews survey the station in the summer season with its engineers: generators, renewables, batteries, tanks and transfer points, waste systems, the weather station and the satellite installations. Findings are recorded with drawings. Findings shape the kit for each site before anything is built.
De la commande à l’exploitation · Autorisations
Treaty and programme approval
Changes at Antarctic stations are assessed under the environmental protocol, and the national programme approves work and transport. Every assessment and approval is kept with the station record. No crew goes to site before its approvals are in place. Approvals are tracked site by site, so nothing waits unseen.
De la commande à l’exploitation · Fabrication
Build for one season
Everything is built, tested together and packed for the one ship or flight that reaches the station each season, with spares for a year. Nodes are enrolled with their identities before shipping. Nothing ships until the whole kit has passed its tests together.

Install in the short summer
Crews fit meters and fuel sensors, connect the generator and renewable controllers, install the weather station and node, and connect both satellite links before the season closes. Every point is photographed and recorded. Crews follow the site safety plan throughout the work.
De la commande à l’exploitation · Mise en service
Commission with the winter crew
Chaque nœud prouve son identité. Generator change-overs, battery support and alarms are tested with the winter crew, fuel levels reconciled with dips, and weather reports checked with the global exchange. The crew is trained before the last flight leaves. Acceptance is recorded with the owner before handover.
De la commande à l’exploitation · Exploitation
Run the winter
The winter crew and the home programme see power, fuel, environment and weather. Renewables cut fuel use, faults raise alarms before they become emergencies, and fuel is forecast to the next resupply. Every alert and action is kept on the record.
De la commande à l’exploitation · Maintenance
Maintain with remote support
The winter crew does routine work with remote support; software updates arrive over the satellite link; each summer crews replace worn parts and recalibrate sensors. Environmental records are prepared for the programme and treaty reporting. Maintenance history stays with each site for its whole life.

For crews, logistics and science
Station leaders and winter crews receive power and fuel status; programme logistics receive the fuel forecast to resupply; global weather centres receive observations; treaty and national authorities receive environmental records, each tied to station and time. Every product can be traced back to its readings.

Protocol and practice
Fuel, waste and spill records support the environmental protocol to the Antarctic Treaty, weather follows the WMO instrument guide and global observing manual, and the hybrid power plant follows the international specifications for renewable and hybrid systems. Every record is kept for the programme and the treaty.

01Le lieu et ses dangers
Où il fonctionne, et ce qui peut mal tourner.
Operating contextAntarctic stations operate under the environmental protocol to the Antarctic Treaty, which governs waste, fuel and impact assessment; Arctic stations follow national rules. Weather observations from stations feed the global observing system, and hybrid power systems follow the international specifications for renewable and hybrid systems.
Dangers
- Generator or fuel failure in the polar night
- Fuel spills on ice and land
- Satellite links lost in storms
- Winter crews too small to watch everything
- Fuel deliveries limited to one season
