Reference designs

Drawn to scale, published once licensed.

Reference designs, inside Hardware & power: environmental condition classes, thermal design and cooling, cold-climate heating, ingress protection (IP code) and more. Every item is traced to its specification, from ETSI EN 300 019-1 series to IEC 60721-3 series, and runs on the open Observatory Protocol.

01What it is

Thermal design and ingress.

How a remote site is powered, stored, distributed, cooled, sealed, tested, grounded, held up and kept safe, from a solar-powered sensor to a hybrid microgrid on a guyed mast. Each technology below carries what it is, what we do with it, and the standard it is drawn against.

Power, energy and ruggedisation

Environmental condition classes

Defined climatic and mechanical classes for storage, transport and outdoor use.

We design.

ETSI EN 300 019-1 series · IEC 60721-3 series

Power, energy and ruggedisation

Thermal design and cooling

Passive, heat-exchanger and air-conditioned enclosure designs from heat and solar load.

We design and maintain.

ASHRAE TC 9.9 thermal guidelines · IEC 60068-2-5 (simulated solar radiation)

Power, energy and ruggedisation

Cold-climate heating

Heaters, insulation and cold-start sequences for electronics and batteries.

We design and maintain.

IEC 60068-2-1 (cold)

Power, energy and ruggedisation

Ingress protection (IP code)

Protection against dust and water defined by test, chosen per location.

We design.

IEC 60529 (IP code)

Power, energy and ruggedisation

Impact protection (IK code)

Protection of enclosures against mechanical impact and vandalism.

We design.

IEC 62262 (IK code)

Power, energy and ruggedisation

Enclosure types

Enclosure ratings used in North American specifications.

We design.

NEMA 250 · CSA C22.2 No. 94.2

Power, energy and ruggedisation

Corrosion and coatings

Material and coating selection for coastal, industrial and salt-spray sites.

We design and maintain.

ISO 12944-2 (corrosivity categories) · IEC 60068-2-52 (cyclic salt mist)

Frontier · Power, energy and ruggedisation

Phase-change thermal buffering

Phase-change materials in enclosures that flatten day-night swings without active cooling.

We design and integrate.

IEC 60068-2-14 (change of temperature, verification)

Power, energy and ruggedisation

Solar PV modules

Module design qualification and safety for decades outdoors, including snow, hail and heat.

We design, integrate, deploy, operate and maintain.

IEC 61215 series (design qualification) · IEC 61730 series (module safety)

03On the grid

Every site joins one observing grid.

The open networks on the grid today, over real relief and the geodesic cells we count them into, filtered to the energy industry domain this area serves. A site built here enrols into the same grid.

04In the field

Where this runs, sector by sector.

6 deployment scenarios from the sector research that rely on reference designs.

Cities

Hybrid air-quality network

Reference analysers plus calibrated low-cost nodes; low-cost sensors alone do not meet regulatory requirements.
Government and public safety

Urban street-flood sensor network

Open-hardware depth sensors with open data and alerts to emergency management.
Government and public safety

Deployable communications and sensing for incident command

A cell on wheels with satellite backhaul, mesh telemetry and environment nodes at the incident base.
Cities

Municipal low-power radio or private 5G layer

A city-wide connectivity layer as digital public infrastructure.
Communities and rural

Remote microgrid, sensing and connectivity bundle

Solar-plus-storage telemetry with a weather station and a small cell in a diesel-reduction project.
Development and humanitarian

Displacement-site connectivity and sensing

Point-to-multipoint wireless, satellite backhaul, solar and water-point sensors with protection safeguards.
