Weather and environment

WMO siting practice, WIGOS metadata.

Weather and environment, inside Sensors & instruments: air temperature and humidity, atmospheric pressure, surface wind, precipitation and more. Every item is traced to its specification, from WMO-No. 8 Volume I (temperature, humidity) to WMO-No. 8 Volume I (atmospheric pressure), and runs on the open Observatory Protocol.

01What it is

Meteorology (WMO No. 8 classes).

Instruments placed in the air, water, ground and spectrum, from weather stations to seismometers, radars and cameras, with the calibration, metadata and quality control that make their readings evidence. Each technology below carries what it is, what we do with it, and the standard it is drawn against.

In situ sensors and instruments

Air temperature and humidity

Ventilated, shielded thermometers and hygrometers sited and exposed to WMO practice.

We design, integrate, deploy, operate, maintain and support.

WMO-No. 8 Volume I (temperature, humidity)

In situ sensors and instruments

Atmospheric pressure

Barometers for weather, altimetry correction and storm surge analysis.

We design, integrate, deploy, operate, maintain and support.

WMO-No. 8 Volume I (atmospheric pressure)

In situ sensors and instruments

Surface wind

Cup, vane and ultrasonic anemometers at standard heights with exposure corrections.

In situ sensors and instruments

Visibility, cloud and present weather

Forward-scatter visibility sensors, ceilometers and present-weather sensors for aviation and roads.

We design, integrate, deploy, operate, maintain and support.

WMO-No. 8 Volume I (visibility, clouds, present weather)

In situ sensors and instruments

Siting classification

Classes for the exposure of each instrument so data users know how representative a site is.

We design.

WMO-No. 8 siting classifications for surface observing stations · ISO 19289:2014

In situ sensors and instruments

Automatic weather stations

Integrated stations with loggers, power and telemetry, run unattended for years.

03On the grid

Every site joins one observing grid.

The open networks on the grid today, over real relief and the geodesic cells we count them into, filtered to the atmosphere domain this area serves. A site built here enrols into the same grid.

04In the field

Where this runs, sector by sector.

6 deployment scenarios from the sector research that rely on weather and environment.

Government and public safety

National GBON surface and upper-air network

WMO-grade stations reporting through WIS 2.0, funded through the systematic-observations financing pathway.
Government and public safety

Wildfire camera network and fire-weather stations

Camera towers with edge inference and co-located fire-weather stations, utility- or agency-funded.
Government and public safety

Urban street-flood sensor network

Open-hardware depth sensors with open data and alerts to emergency management.
Government and public safety

Alerting integration with the Common Alerting Protocol and cell broadcast

Software-heavy: sensor triggers feed an alert origination tool; the alert authority keeps every decision.
Communities and rural

Remote microgrid, sensing and connectivity bundle

Solar-plus-storage telemetry with a weather station and a small cell in a diesel-reduction project.
Industrial

Mine-wide private LTE or 5G with environmental sensing

Autonomy communications plus dust, blast vibration, slope and tailings monitoring.
