Scaled distance

The blast is planned in kilograms per delay.

Autonomy communications plus dust, blast vibration, slope and tailings monitoring. Ground vibration from a blast follows the scaled distance SD = D ÷ √W, with D the distance in metres and W the charge fired per delay in kilograms. A site-law PPV = K·SD−β, here with K = 1140 and β = 1.6, gives the peak particle velocity at a receptor; turned around, it gives the largest charge per delay that keeps a receptor below its limit. Geophones on the network replace the constants with the site’s own.

Displacement velocity

A dam speaks in millimetres per day.

Continuous GNSS on the crest turns a survey into a time series. The signal is the trend, not the reading: velocity is the least-squares slope of displacement over a trailing window, and the window trades noise for reaction time. A short window alerts early and falsely; a long one alerts late and surely.

03 · Utility grid edge

Fire weather

A feeder is a fire question on a dry, windy day.

Distribution automation, distributed-energy control and wildfire-risk weather on a dedicated band. The Fosberg fire weather index combines temperature, humidity and wind into one number from 0 to 100: an equilibrium moisture content m from temperature and humidity, a damping η = 1 − 2(m/30) + 1.5(m/30)² − 0.5(m/30)³, then η·√(1 + U²) ÷ 0.3002 with U in miles per hour. A station on the same private network as the reclosers lets the utility change protection settings when the number climbs.

Latency budget

Remote control lives inside a round trip.

Deterministic networking for cranes and vehicles with fenceline air quality, a met-ocean station and a vessel-tracking receiver. A remote-controlled crane closes its loop through the radio twice, the transport twice and the application once. Light in fibre covers about 200 km per millisecond, so where the core and the application sit decides the floor of the budget before any radio is chosen.

Gaussian plume

A leak is found where the plume meets a sensor.

Fenceline sensors and optical gas imaging under regulatory leak-detection cadences. At ground level a ground-level release spreads as C = Q ÷ (π·u·σy·σz) · e−y²/2σy², with the spreads σ from the Briggs rural curves for the atmosphere’s stability. Stable night air keeps the plume narrow and strong; daytime mixing spreads it wide and thin, and either can slip between two fenceline sensors.

Cell plan

Count cells twice: for coverage and for capacity.

Shared-spectrum private networks as the factory-floor default in some markets. Coverage gives one count, hexagons of radius r over the floor, n = ⌈A ÷ 2.598r²⌉. Capacity gives another, total demand over what one cell carries, bandwidth × spectral efficiency. The plan is the larger of the two, and on a busy floor it is usually capacity.
