Oceans: from the coastline to the open ocean: where it is deployed. The loop, step by step: 1. A valley site at first light. 2. Sensor, link, edge and console stand ready. 3. Cloud and wind sweep up the valley. 4. The station and the vault register it. 5. Time and place are fixed to every sample. 6. Signed packets hop over the radio link. 7. Relays carry the packets without reading them. 8. Signatures are checked before any model runs. 9. The edge model checks it against its limit. 10. The edge releases confirmed results only. 11. The alert reaches the operator console. 12. The console shows the evidence with the alert. 13. The whole chain is archived for audit. 14. Everything settles back to idle.

  1. Oceans · Use cases

From the coastline to the open ocean

Wave buoys and tide gauges, profiling floats and coastal water quality, ports and shipping lanes, and satellite links where no cable runs, with every observation carrying its position, time and quality flag. Needs: waves, tides and sea level, water temperature and salinity, coastal water quality, port and vessel conditions and connectivity at sea.

  2. Use case

    Wave buoy coastal array

Low-cost moored wave buoys with satellite telemetry, deployed as an array along a coast or port approach. For ports, coastal agencies, surf and fishing communities. Data products: wave spectra and sea-state time series and inputs to coastal forecasts. Drawn against IOOS and IMOS quality-control procedures.

    Standards
    IOOS and IMOS quality-control procedures
  3. Use case

    Hybrid air-quality observatory

A few reference analysers and many low-cost nodes, with co-location calibration and an open-data feed. For cities, public-health units, school districts. Data products: air-quality index and hyperlocal maps, labelled supplementary, calibrated time series with quality flags and publication route to an open air-quality aggregator.

    Standards
EU Directive 2024/2881 (ambient air quality) · CEN/TS 17660 (sensor systems) · US EPA FEM/FRM reference methods
  4. Use case

    Community cellular and sensing

Small cells with an open core, satellite backhaul and solar power, plus a sensing overlay, for a community that owns its network. For indigenous organisations and Indigenous-owned service providers, remote communities. Data products: coverage and service maps in the regulator’s format, speed-test and uptime evidence and community sensing overlay (weather, water, air).

    Standards
3GPP LTE/NR · ISED Access Licensing Framework (SAB-002-26) · Local data-governance principles (OCAP) where applicable
  5. Use case

    Bioacoustic biodiversity observatory

Open-hardware acoustic recorders on solar power with low-power radio or satellite uplink, for species baselines. For conservation organisations, parks, credit developers. Data products: species occupancy and acoustic baselines. Drawn against FAIR data principles. Every reading and every change leaves a record that can be checked later.

    Standards
    FAIR data principles
  6. Use case

    Low-cost stream gauge network

Radar or pressure level sensors with low-power radio and solar power, as a cheaper tier beside a national gauge network. For provinces and states, watershed boards. Data products: stage and flow time series and flood-warning inputs, labelled supplementary. Drawn against WMO hydrological observing practices and National gauge standards.

    Standards
WMO hydrological observing practices · National gauge standards
  7. Use case

    Research-infrastructure gap node

A standardised observation package with a FAIR data pipeline, built to extend a research infrastructure’s coverage. For research infrastructures and universities. 8. Use case

Highway corridor coverage and safety sensing

Small cells with satellite backhaul along an unserved highway, with road-weather and camera nodes. For provinces and states, carriers. Data products: coverage maps and road-condition observations. Drawn against 3GPP LTE/NR and NTCIP 1204. Every reading and every change leaves a record that can be checked later.

    Standards
    3GPP LTE/NR · NTCIP 1204
  9. Trust

Every node proves what it is

A node joins only after its hardware root of trust answers an attestation challenge. Keys stay in secure hardware, software arrives signed, and every reading carries a signature, so its origin can be checked by anyone downstream without asking us.

  10. Time and place

Every reading carries when and where

Readings are stamped against a disciplined clock, from satellite time or a PTP grandmaster, together with the station position and its siting record. When time or position is degraded, the record says so instead of hiding it, and every analyst downstream sees the same warning.

  11. How it scales

    One base unit, repeated

A programme starts with one base node and the instruments it reads. A station adds power and radio, a site adds a relay, a fleet repeats the proven site across many places, and a network federates fleets through edge and core. Capacity grows by adding units, never by replacing what works.

  12. What you get

    Ocean and coastal observing

Moored buoys, profiling floats, tide and wave gauges, coastal radar and AIS reception with quality-controlled feeds. Delivered as managed service and data licence, for ports, coastal agencies, offshore energy, fisheries. Scale: Coastline to basin. Service levels are written as numbers you can measure on your own dashboard.
