**Time distribution**

# PTP, SyncE and NTP, engineered to the budget.

Time distribution, inside Positioning, navigation and timing: Precision Time Protocol, telecom profile with full timing support, telecom profile with partial timing support, frequency synchronisation profile and more. Every item is traced to its specification, from IEEE 1588-2019 to ITU-T G.8275.1, and runs on the open Observatory Protocol.

## Precision Time Protocol

The base protocol for distributing time and phase over packet networks. In time distribution, part of Positioning, navigation and timing, the packet timing: PTP, SyncE and NTP layer holds Precision Time Protocol, drawn against IEEE 1588-2019 and used beside time and phase network limits on the same sites.

The problem

### PTP, SyncE and NTP, engineered to the budget

Positions drive autonomous trucks; timestamps order every event in a network. When a receiver is jammed or spoofed, both can be wrong while looking perfectly normal. Integrity has to be designed and measured, because a degraded signal rarely announces itself to the systems that depend on it.

1. Positioning, navigation and timing · Time distribution PTP, SyncE and NTP, engineered to the budget Positions drive autonomous trucks; timestamps order every event in a network. When a receiver is jammed or spoofed, both can be wrong while looking perfectly normal. Integrity has to be designed and measured, because a degraded signal rarely announces itself to the systems that depend on it.
2. What it does Precision Time Protocol The base protocol for distributing time and phase over packet networks. In time distribution, part of Positioning, navigation and timing, the packet timing: PTP, SyncE and NTP layer holds Precision Time Protocol, drawn against IEEE 1588-2019 and used beside time and phase network limits on the same sites. SpecificationIEEE 1588-2019
3. Packet timing Synchronous Ethernet and enhanced SyncE Physical-layer frequency distribution that stabilises PTP and supports holdover. In time distribution, part of Positioning, navigation and timing, the packet timing: PTP, SyncE and NTP layer holds synchronous Ethernet and enhanced SyncE, drawn against ITU-T G.8261 and ITU-T G.8262 and G.8262.1. SpecificationITU-T G.8261 · ITU-T G.8262 and G.8262.1 (EEC and eEEC)
4. Packet timing Telecom profile with partial timing support Timing over networks that do not support PTP in every node, often with local GNSS assist. In time distribution, part of Positioning, navigation and timing, the packet timing: PTP, SyncE and NTP layer holds telecom profile with partial timing support, drawn against ITU-T G.8275.2 and ITU-T G.8273.4 and used beside sub-nanosecond timing on the same sites. SpecificationITU-T G.8275.2 · ITU-T G.8273.4 (partial timing support clocks)
5. Packet timing Frequency synchronisation profile PTP used to deliver frequency only, for FDD and legacy equipment. In time distribution, part of Positioning, navigation and timing, the packet timing: PTP, SyncE and NTP layer holds frequency synchronisation profile, drawn against ITU-T G.8265.1 and used beside NTP and Network Time Security on the same sites. SpecificationITU-T G.8265.1
6. Time and place When and where, on every record Every record made for time distribution carries its time, from a clock disciplined by satellite time or a PTP grandmaster, with the position and siting record of the station that made it. When time or position degrades, the record for time distribution says so, and every user downstream sees the same warning.
7. Packet timing Telecom profile with full timing support Every node a boundary or transparent clock, for the phase accuracy TDD and Open RAN need. In time distribution, part of Positioning, navigation and timing, the packet timing: PTP, SyncE and NTP layer holds telecom profile with full timing support, drawn against ITU-T G.8275.1 and ITU-T G.8273.2 and used beside industry PTP profiles on the same sites. SpecificationITU-T G.8275.1 · ITU-T G.8273.2 (T-BC and T-TSC classes)
8. Trust Proved before it is trusted A node joins a network for time distribution only after its hardware root of trust answers an attestation challenge. Its keys stay in secure hardware, its software arrives signed and every record it makes for time distribution carries a signature, so anyone downstream can check where a value came from.
9. Evidence Traced to its specifications We trace each part of time distribution to its specification: IEEE 1588-2019, ITU-T G.8275.1 and ITU-T G.8273.2. We keep the versions, configurations and test results of time distribution as signed records, so a buyer or an auditor can check what was delivered against what was specified. StandardsIEEE 1588-2019 · ITU-T G.8275.1 · ITU-T G.8273.2 · ITU-T G.8273.3
10. Operations Every node watched, every incident closed The operations console shows every node of a network for time distribution with its state, its plan and its evidence. An alert arrives with its data and a runbook, acknowledging it opens a work order, and an incident for time distribution closes only when the operator records the cause and verifies the fix.
11. Failure and recovery When a node fails, the fleet knows first When a node for time distribution goes silent or a sensor drifts, the node buffers its data and fails over to a second link where the site has one. The alert carries the evidence a responder needs, and the record for time distribution loses nothing and counts nothing twice.
12. What you get Timing and positioning integrity PTP grandmasters with GNSS holdover, interference detection and timing monitoring for networks and instruments. For time distribution, it goes to carriers, utilities, financial infrastructure and observatories as hardware and software or a managed service, sized to the sites they run. [Talk to sales](https://observatory.global/contact/sales-enquiry/)
13. Next step Time distribution, planned with you Tell us the sites, the systems time distribution must work with and the outcome you need, with a map or a list of addresses if you have one. An engineer replies with a survey proposal, a design and a scope for time distribution, and the plan grows from one site to the network you need.
