Academy

# Learn to observe. Then build the observatory.

Eight paths, from what an observation is to a commissioned site: instruments and siting, links and clocks, edge compute and field AI, Earth observation, site operations, the open protocol, and the standards that make data trusted. Every lesson runs on the same atlas, spectrum and methods as the rest of this site.

START

**01** · Principles

## Taught the way observatories are run.

Source before claim, method before tool, evidence before sign-off. The rules the long-lived observatories in the atlas kept are the rules every lesson keeps.

**01From the record**

Each path opens with the observatories that met its problem, and the lesson they left, cited from the atlas.

**02Method, then tool**

Every calculation ships with its formula and a worked example you check by hand before any software runs it.

**03Real data**

Exercises run on real elevation, real open networks and real standards, with their licences stated.

**04Evidence, not badges**

A module ends in an artefact someone else can check: a site plan, a link budget, a WIGOS record, a conformance run.

**02** · Paths

## Eight paths, three levels, one grid.

Start anywhere. Paths cross where the work does: a site plan needs power, timing and backhaul, and every path ends on the protocol.

**Foundation** Concepts and vocabulary, no prerequisites.

**Practitioner** Plan, configure and check real systems.

**Advanced** Design, integrate and operate at scale.

**01** · Path

## Foundations of observation.

Before the instrument, the idea: what an observation is, why it must be comparable, and how five thousand years of observatories learned to share units, hours and records.

**For** · Everyone: students, hosts, communities, new team members.

1. **What an observation is** Tell a measurement from an observation: value, unit, time, place, method and uncertainty. *Foundation*
2. **Five thousand years in six eras** Walk the atlas from Stonehenge to Rubin and name what each era added. *Foundation*
3. **Comparability** Explain why the Medici network and the Magnetic Union mattered: shared instruments, hours and units. *Foundation*
4. **Calibration and traceability** Follow a reading back to a reference and say how far you can trust it. *Practitioner*
5. **Long records** See why an unbroken series from one site becomes an instrument in itself, and how records are lost. *Practitioner*
6. **From station to system** Describe how separate stations become one observing system, and what holds a federation together. *Practitioner*

**03** · How it works

## Open to read. An account keeps your work.

The academy sits on the open main site. Read any lesson without signing in; an account keeps your progress, plans and runs. Teams work a path together in the Nexus Observatory app.

- **Read** Every lesson is public, in English and French, with its sources.
- **Try** Interactive explainers on real data: terrain, line of sight, link budgets, timing, satellite passes.
- **Build** Exercises in the Nexus Observatory app produce plans, manifests and conformance runs you keep.
- **Contribute** Lessons are versioned in the open. Propose a correction or a new module; contributors keep their rights.
- **Teach** Universities, colleges and training centres can use the material in their own courses; write to contact@observatory.global, subject “Teaching”.

## Every observatory starts with someone learning to look.
