# Civil sensing for the North.

The North runs on a few remote sites, a sea that freezes and pipes that cross hundreds of kilometres of nothing. The observations that keep them working are civil: weather, ice, power, links. Each chapter puts one of those deployments on the stage and computes the number that decides it.

Orbital geometry

## Geostationary sinks into the horizon.

A remote observatory shares its communications and power with the other civil users of the site. Its link to a geostationary satellite on the same meridian rises at an elevation of arctan((cos φ − R/r)/sin φ), with R/r = 6378/42164 ≈ 0.151. The dish tips lower as you move north; past about 81° the satellite is below the horizon, and at the low angles before that the path runs through more atmosphere and more terrain. Move the site north.

**Elevation to the satellite**: 13.0°
**Slant range**: 40,266 km
**Link**: Clear

Energy budget

## Weeks without sun, on a battery.

Above the Arctic Circle the sun stays down for days to months, and solar charging stops. The site has to carry its load from storage, or from a generator, across the whole night. Polar-night length here is the count of days the sun's centre stays below the horizon at noon, from the Cooper declination and the site latitude; storage is load × 24 h × days, divided by the usable depth of discharge. Cold also cuts usable battery capacity, which is why sites put the bank in a heated enclosure.

Usable depth of discharge

**Days without sunrise**: 99
**Energy to carry the night**: 428 kWh
**Battery bank needed**: 535 kWh
**Daily load**: 4.32 kWh

**03** · Sea-ice travel

Ice mechanics

## Thickness decides who can cross.

Northern communities measure sea-ice thickness along travel routes with towed and fixed sensors, as SmartICE does, and share it for safe travel and search and rescue. The classic bearing rule is Gold's formula, P = A·h², with h in centimetres, P in kilograms and A an ice-strength constant: 3.5 kg/cm² is the safety value, and published recommendations run up to about 10. White or snow ice is weaker than clear ice; many guidelines count it at half its thickness, and they differ on how much to discount it. Set the measured thickness.

Ice type

**Effective thickness**: 30.0 cm
**Allowable load**: 3,150 kg
**Heaviest of: person 100 kg, snowmobile and sled 450 kg, light truck 2,500 kg**: Light truck

**04** · Pipeline resilience

Acoustics

## Two sensors find the leak.

A leak in a pipeline makes a noise that travels both ways along the pipe. Two acoustic sensors a distance L apart hear it at different times, and the difference Δt places it: x = (L − v·Δt)/2 from sensor A, where v is the speed of sound along the pipe. The same arithmetic locates a strike on a buried line. Set the spacing, the pipe's sound speed and the time difference the sensors report.

Sound speed along the pipe

**Leak from sensor A**: 213 m
**From sensor B**: 588 m
**Largest difference this pair can see**: ±0.64 s

Redundancy

## Two independent links, one record.

What an operator of northern or critical infrastructure asks to see, from the sector research. A site that must keep reporting carries two links on independent paths, such as satellite and terrestrial radio. If they fail independently, the site is dark only when both are down: availability 1 − (1 − a₁)(1 − a₂).

- Controlled-goods registration where the equipment requires it
- Security screening where the contract requires it
- Ownership and control disclosed to the buyer

**Dark per year, primary alone**: 87.6 h
**Combined availability**: 99.950 %
**Dark per year, both links**: 4.38 h
