Oceans: from the coastline to the open ocean: the people who run it. The loop, step by step: 1. A valley site at first light. 2. Sensor, link, edge and console stand ready. 3. Cloud and wind sweep up the valley. 4. The station and the vault register it. 5. Time and place are fixed to every sample. 6. Signed packets hop over the radio link. 7. Relays carry the packets without reading them. 8. Signatures are checked before any model runs. 9. The edge model checks it against its limit. 10. The edge releases confirmed results only. 11. The alert reaches the operator console. 12. The console shows the evidence with the alert. 13. The whole chain is archived for audit. 14. Everything settles back to idle.

**Community**

# The oceans community.

The people who design, build and run observation in this industry: engineers, operators, researchers and the communities the systems serve.

[Use cases](https://observatory.global/industries/oceans/use-cases/)

1. Oceans · Community From the coastline to the open ocean Wave buoys and tide gauges, profiling floats and coastal water quality, ports and shipping lanes, and satellite links where no cable runs, with every observation carrying its position, time and quality flag. Needs: waves, tides and sea level, water temperature and salinity, coastal water quality, port and vessel conditions and connectivity at sea.
2. Community Wave buoy coastal array Low-cost moored wave buoys with satellite telemetry, deployed as an array along a coast or port approach. Built with ports, coastal agencies, surf and fishing communities, and open to participation. Volunteers and local partners install, host and read stations alongside our crews; their data carries the same metadata and quality flags as every other source.
3. Community Hybrid air-quality observatory A few reference analysers and many low-cost nodes, with co-location calibration and an open-data feed. Built with cities, public-health units, school districts, and open to participation. Volunteers and local partners install, host and read stations alongside our crews; their data carries the same metadata and quality flags as every other source.
4. Community Community cellular and sensing Small cells with an open core, satellite backhaul and solar power, plus a sensing overlay, for a community that owns its network. Built with indigenous organisations and Indigenous-owned service providers, remote communities, and open to participation. Volunteers and local partners install, host and read stations alongside our crews; their data carries the same metadata and quality flags as every other source.
5. Community Bioacoustic biodiversity observatory Open-hardware acoustic recorders on solar power with low-power radio or satellite uplink, for species baselines. Built with conservation organisations, parks, credit developers, and open to participation. Volunteers and local partners install, host and read stations alongside our crews; their data carries the same metadata and quality flags as every other source.
6. What must be measured Oceans: what must be measured Waves, tides and sea level, water temperature and salinity, coastal water quality, port and vessel conditions and connectivity at sea. Each is measured by instruments sited to recognised practice, read by a base node that stamps, checks and signs every value.
7. How it works From instrument to record, in one chain An instrument reads; the base node checks the value, stamps time and place, signs it and sends it over the link the site has: cellular, LoRaWAN, private 5G or satellite. The edge verifies the signature before admitting it, and the core catalogues it with its metadata, quality flag and licence.
8. Trust Every node proves what it is A node joins only after its hardware root of trust answers an attestation challenge. Keys stay in secure hardware, software arrives signed, and every reading carries a signature, so its origin can be checked by anyone downstream without asking us.
9. Time and place Every reading carries when and where Readings are stamped against a disciplined clock, from satellite time or a PTP grandmaster, together with the station position and its siting record. When time or position is degraded, the record says so instead of hiding it, and every analyst downstream sees the same warning.
10. How it scales One base unit, repeated A programme starts with one base node and the instruments it reads. A station adds power and radio, a site adds a relay, a fleet repeats the proven site across many places, and a network federates fleets through edge and core. Capacity grows by adding units, never by replacing what works.
11. Updates Updates in rings, with rollback Software and configuration reach the fleet in rings: a canary site first, then a few, then all, each ring gated on health and data completeness. A failed gate stops the wave and returns each node to its last good release, without a site visit.
12. What you get Ocean and coastal observing Moored buoys, profiling floats, tide and wave gauges, coastal radar and AIS reception with quality-controlled feeds. Delivered as managed service and data licence, for ports, coastal agencies, offshore energy, fisheries. Scale: Coastline to basin. Service levels are written as numbers you can measure on your own dashboard. [Talk to sales](https://observatory.global/contact/sales-enquiry/)
13. Next step Plan an oceans deployment Tell us the sites, the measurements and the people who will use them. We reply with a design and a scope for oceans. An engineer replies with a survey proposal and a scope, and the plan grows from one site to the network you need, at your pace. **01** Why a community

## Observation is built by many hands.

Engineers, operators, researchers and residents each see a part of the system. The community puts the parts in one place.

**02** Code of conduct

## One standard for every space we host.

- **Respect** Disagree with ideas, never with people. No harassment, in any form.
- **Evidence** Claims carry their source. Measurements carry their method.
- **Credit** Work is credited to the people who did it, under the licence they chose.
- **Safety** No instructions that put people, sites or networks at risk.
- **Privacy** No one's personal data is posted without their consent.
- **Authority** Official warnings and decisions stay with the bodies that hold them.
