Explainer

# Instruments that teach.

A weather station on the gym roof, a seismograph in the basement, a CO₂ sensor on the classroom wall, a statewide network run by the university down the road. Each chapter puts one education deployment on the stage, lets you change the input that matters and computes what a student would.

**Chapters**: 6
**Deployments**: 5
**Readouts**: 19
**Scale**: 1:1 metres

Spatial density

## How far is the nearest station?

A state or provincial mesonet run by a university puts identical towers across the territory so that every town is close to a reading. On a square layout the spacing is √(A/n), and the average distance from any point to its nearest station is about 0.383 times the spacing, the mean distance from a random point in a square to its centre. Set the area and the number of towers.

**Spacing**: 38.7 km
**Average distance to the nearest tower**: 14.8 km
**Farthest any point can be**: 27.4 km
**Area per tower**: 1,500 km²

Psychrometry

## Is it safe to run outside?

A weather station on the school roof gives the class real numbers and gives the coach a call. The heat index combines temperature and humidity into how hot it feels in shade; this is the US National Weather Service algorithm, the Rothfusz regression with its low- and high-humidity adjustments, and its caution bands. Dew point from the Magnus formula.

**Heat index**: 37.1 °C
**Band**: Extreme caution
**Dew point**: 23.3 °C

Seismology

## S minus P gives the distance.

A seismograph in the school basement records the P wave first and the slower S wave after it. The gap between them grows with distance: d = Δt · Vp·Vs/(Vp − Vs). With typical crustal speeds of about 6 km/s for P and 3.5 km/s for S, that is roughly 8 km for every second of S − P, the rule students use on their own records. Three schools with three distances locate the quake. Set the S − P time read off the trace.

**Distance to the quake**: 101 km
**P travel time**: 16.8 s
**S travel time**: 28.8 s

Mass balance

## Thirty students, one window.

A CO₂ sensor on the classroom wall turns ventilation into a number the class can see. At steady state the room sits above outdoor air by the generation rate over the airflow: ΔC = G/Q, with G = 0.0052 L/s per seated adult (children breathe out less, so this errs high) and outdoor air at 420 ppm. The room approaches that level with time constant V/Q. Health Canada's long-term exposure limit for indoor CO₂ is 1,000 ppm.

**Steady-state CO₂**: 1,720 ppm
**Against 1,000 ppm**: 720 ppm over
**Time to 95 % of that**: 83 min
**Air for 1,000 ppm**: 9.0 L/s per person

Link budget

## Shared spectrum, counted in cells.

A campus network on shared mid-band spectrum, used for teaching and for research on the network itself. Free-space loss is 20 log d + 20 log f + 32.44 (d in km, f in MHz); buildings, trees and bodies add clutter loss on top. What the link budget leaves sets the cell radius, and hexagonal cells of radius r each cover 2.6 r². Set the band, the budget and the clutter.

Band

**Cell radius**: 332 m
**Loss at 100 m in free space**: 83.6 dB
**Cells for the campus**: 6

Data literacy

## A year of readings per classroom.

What a school board asks to see, from the sector research. The data-literacy case is arithmetic: a station that reports every few minutes gives each class a full year of real, local records to plot, average and question.

Reporting interval

- Curriculum alignment
- Safe installation on school property
- Data-literacy outcomes
- Low cost per school

**Records per variable per year**: 105,120
**Values per station per year**: 630,720

## Instruments that teach.
