Sports and events · Sector explainer

Fifty thousand phones, one storm cell.

Venues and stadiums, ski resorts and avalanche terrain, mass events and circuits. Five scenes, each a working calculation: radio capacity for a full bowl, heat stress and lightning distance, avalanche terrain and warning lead time, a temporary marathon observatory and circuit telemetry.

01 · Stadium 5G

Scenario

Capacity is a crowd problem.

A private operations slice beside the carriers’ network, with heat, air and lightning sensing. The bowl is sized by busy-hour demand: how many people are online at once and what each one pulls. Capacity per cell is bandwidth times spectral efficiency times the downlink share of a DDDSU frame; carriers bring their own spectrum through the neutral host.

02 · Heat and lightning

Scenario

Stop play on a number, not a feeling.

A roof station reads the three temperatures behind the wet-bulb globe temperature, and counts the seconds between flash and thunder. The organiser’s rule turns both into a decision on the screen in the control room: WBGT = 0.7 Tnw + 0.2 Tg + 0.1 Ta, and every second of delay is 343 metres.

03 · Avalanche terrain

Scenario

Minutes matter on the road below.

Radar, infrasound and geophones with a snow station feeding the control room. Most slab avalanches release on slopes of about 30 to 45 degrees. The model below maps that band on the slope; the lead time is the front’s travel time to the road less the infrasound arrival at 343 m/s and the control-room decision.

04 · Mass events

Scenario

An observatory for one morning.

Deployable private LTE, heat-stress stations, air quality and crowd counting, reused across events. The kit is sized from the course: a heat station every few kilometres and enough deployable cells to cover the route and the finish: one cell per twice its usable radius, one station per spacing.

05 · Circuits

Scenario

Every lap, every channel.

Private 5G for telemetry and broadcast with trackside weather. Uplink is the hard direction: telemetry and onboard video from every car, for the whole race.

06 · Proof

Evidence

What the venue checks.

Operators, leagues and insurers ask for test results against ground truth, not brochures. The grid keeps each one as a record.
